Haddon Hall

Haddon Hall is a historic country house located near Bakewell in Derbyshire, overlooking the River Wye on the edge of the Peak District. Widely regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval manor houses in England, the hall has a history that spans more than eight centuries. The earliest parts of Haddon Hall date back to the 12th century, when the estate belonged to the Vernon family, who held the property for several generations. Over time the house was gradually expanded, with major additions made during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, resulting in the impressive complex of courtyards, halls, and towers that can still be seen today. In 1567, the estate passed to the Manners family through the marriage of Dorothy Vernon to Sir John Manners. The Manners family would later become the Dukes of Rutland, and Haddon Hall has remained associated with the Rutland estate ever since. Despite this, the hall was largely left unoccupied for many years from the late 17th century onwards, which helped preserve its medieval character. The hall is renowned for its historic interiors, including the Great Hall, Long Gallery, chapel, and medieval kitchens, as well as its beautifully maintained Elizabethan terraced gardens overlooking the Wye Valley. Because the building escaped significant modernisation, it provides an unusually authentic glimpse into life in a medieval English manor house. Today Haddon Hall is open to visitors and is also a popular filming location for historical films and television productions. Its remarkable preservation and picturesque setting make it one of Derbyshire’s most important historic landmarks and a highlight for those exploring the Peak District.
