Haunted Derbyshire — verified historyThe stone bridge over the River Derwent at Cromford is a historic crossing located at the heart of the village of Cromford in Derbyshire. Positioned close to the junction of Cromford Hill, Water Lane, and Mill Road, the bridge has long served as an important route through the Derwent Valley, linking communities on either side of the river.
The bridge is believed to date from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, a period when Cromford was rapidly developing due to the influence of Sir Richard Arkwright and the growth of the cotton industry. With the construction of Cromford Mill in 1771, the village became a key centre of the Industrial Revolution, and reliable crossings of the River Derwent were essential for transporting goods, workers, and materials between the mill complex and surrounding settlements.
Constructed from local stone and featuring traditional parapet walls, the bridge reflects the practical design typical of many rural Derbyshire crossings from this period. Over the years it has carried everything from horse-drawn carts and industrial traffic to the modern vehicles that pass through the village today.
Situated within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, the bridge forms part of a landscape deeply connected to Britain’s industrial history. Surrounded by historic buildings, mill workers’ cottages, and the nearby Cromford Canal, the bridge remains a key feature of the village and an enduring reminder of the area’s industrial past.
